Bandura
Dmytro and Daria are a bandura duo from eastern Ukraine who currently live in the Netherlands and promote Ukrainian culture through music. In their performances, they combine traditional Ukrainian folk music with modern music and showcase the distinctive sound of the bandura—one of Ukraine’s most iconic instruments. The bandura is a unique stringed instrument that combines elements of a harp and a lute. The instrument is known for its warm, soft, yet powerful sound. Through their music, Dmytro and Daria introduce European audiences to Ukrainian traditions, contemporary culture, and the emotion conveyed by the bandura. Their performances blend authenticity, modernity, and a genuine love for Ukrainian music.
During this performance, you’ll be introduced to the bandura, Ukraine’s national plucked string instrument. This fascinating instrument combines the acoustic qualities of a lute and a harp. A modern concert bandura has up to 68 strings, each of which—just like on a harp—produces a single fixed note. Historically, its clear, sparkling sound played a central role in the telling of epic folk tales, and even today it conveys a unique musical atmosphere."
