Culture Sniffers: pysanky / Egg painting

  • Zaans Culture House 2 Cornelis van Uitgeeststraat Zaandam, NH, 1508 EH Netherlands (map)

One egg is not just an egg, especially not around Easter. We’re familiar with the tradition of painting and hiding eggs. But that’s not just the case in the Netherlands. In Ukraine, colorful eggs are decorated around the beginning of spring and Easter. These pysanky aren’t just painted: a wish or story is “written” on the egg using colors and special patterns. Together with artists from the Ukrainian community, we’ll explore this centuries-old tradition and the meaning of various symbols. Starting with the question , “What wish for a new beginning would you like to share?” you’ll design and decorate your own pysanka.

What is CultuurSnuivers?
Through CultuurSnuivers, we invite all children to explore the rich diversity of cultures that come together in Zaanstad in an accessible and creative way. You don’t need to be familiar with a tradition from home: it’s precisely by creating, playing, and discovering together that children develop their creative talents and deepen their curiosity and understanding of one another.
